Representing Four Generations of Nevada Development
Brothers Troy and Travis Means have a long history in the construction industry. Fourth generation Nevadans, they began their careers at an early age. Today, they are owners of HomeCrafters, an award winning custom home and luxury subdivision developer based in Reno.
To say Troy and Travis have construction in their blood is an understatement. Their father, Alan Means, was the original developer of Caughlin Ranch, their grandfather is a structural engineer and their great-grandfather was an architect. While growing up, the brothers spent a lot of time on construction sites, and after working summer jobs pounding nails, both Troy and Travis went off to college with the family business in mind.
Travis received his degree in construction management from Cal Poly at San Luis Obispo, and Troy earned degrees in business and real estate finance from the University of Southern California. They both worked for other companies after college until Troy founded HomeCrafters in 1996. He convinced his brother, Travis, to join the business in 2000 and the partnership has been running smoothly ever since.
"We really do work well together," Troy says. "We balance each other out. I deal with the financial and businessmanagement side of things and Travis deals with all the technical aspects of construction management."
Making Their Mark
HomeCrafters has made its mark on the industry since its inception, winning a total of 24 Banner and Parade of Homes Awards for its custom and production homes. Beginning primarily as a custom homebuilder, the company has built 175 finely crafted homes to date.
The Means brothers expanded their business into the luxury development arena in 1999 and currently have three projects under way. The Reserve at Monte Rosa, launched in the spring of 2007, is off of Mount Rose highway.HomeCrafters' second development, Villagio delaMontagna, is a 60-unit luxury home community located in the desirable, secluded foothills of Southwest Reno with stunning views of downtown. The third project is Mayberry Villas, a private gated community consisting of 24 villa-style homes and offering a carefree lifestyle in a quaint village setting.
All ofHomeCrafters' customand production homes include well-thoughtout interior and exterior designs, cutting edge details and products, hand textured wall finishes, authentic custom wrought iron details, the use of distressed woods, custom cabinetry, commercial grade appliances, overgrouted stone veneers, high quality finish work and professionally coordinated color palettes. The end result is a luxury home built with integrity and pride, ready for the buyer to create lifelong memories in.
"Every home we build is built as if it were our own, and the attention to details and quality standout," says Troy. "When these small details come together and are working in harmony with each other, the home feels spectacular and luxurious."
Building Relationships
With its founders growing up in the Reno community with industry expertise that spans generations, HomeCrafters has established a strong reputation and long-lasting business relationships in the area since the company's beginning. Homecrafters carefully selects employees and trade contractors who exemplify a desire to be a part of a team that is driven to be the best.
"When you hire HomeCrafters to build your custom home or remodel, or if you choose to purchase in one of our neighborhoods, you will be dealing with a team of professionals who take exceptional pride in their work, their finished product and, ultimately, your satisfaction and happiness with your new HomeCrafters home," Troy says, adding that at HomeCrafters, quality and excellence isn't just a state of mind?it's their business practice.
Looking Forward
HomeCrafters has been able to successfully adapt to market conditions, anticipate customer needs and find niche products that are attractive to this market place. HomeCrafters' custom home division will continue to build from six to 12 custom homes each year in Reno, and is just now expanding into the Tahoe-Truckee area.
The company recently opened a luxury remodel division, completing eight projects in 2007. They expect the remodel market to continue to grow over the next several years. The luxury subdivision department will continue to focus on the three communities as they release lots and continue constructing distinctive homes for buyers.
"We have been careful to grow our company at a steady rate since our inception," Troy says. "This has allowed us to keep focused on the uniqueness and quality of our homes and to give each of our clients the service they deserve."
