BANN Introduces Green Guidelines
The Builders Association of Northern Nevada (BANN) has embraced new voluntary guidelines to help all homebuilders incorporate environmental practices into every phase of the homebuilding process. The new Sierra green guidelines encourage builders to participate using the NAHB National Green Building Program, which offers innovative, resource-efficient building techniques, while preserving affordability.
"We're bringing green building into mainstream home construction," says Mike Dillon, executive director of The Builders. "Builders can do a tremendous amount to make homes more environmentally friendly, without pricing them out of the reach of the average home buyer. Our Sierra green guidelines aim to educate builders and consumers about building green."
Although homes built today are much more energy-efficient than those built during the 1970s, green building historically has been the province of high-end, niche builders who cater to a wealthy clientele. NAHB wrote the model green homebuilding guidelines, which the new program is based on, in 2005 at the urging of members who need research and education on building resource-efficient homes that are both affordable and customized to local conditions.
"NAHB members have demonstrated that the model green homebuilding guidelines are flexible, so joining the new national program is right for northern Nevada, one that considers our climate and other factors that affect home construction and energy consumption," says Dillon.
